If you've ever ordered a Teflon conveyor belt, you know it's rarely a straightforward "one size fits all" transaction. The specs sheet lists optionsthickness, mesh size, joint type, edge finishand unless you know what each one does, picking the right combination can feel like guesswork.

This guide walks through each customization option so you know what you're choosing and why it matters.

 

Thickness: What It Controls

Thickness applies to both mesh and solid PTFE belts, but it means different things for each.

 

For solid belts (PTFE fabric): Thickness determines strength, flexibility, and how the belt handles tension. Standard ranges go from 0.08mm up to 1.35mm. Thinner belts (0.080.3mm) are more flexible and work well over small-diameter rollers, but they're not as strong. Thicker belts (0.5mm and up) handle heavier loads and higher tension, but they're stiffer and require larger pulleys.

 

For mesh belts: Thickness usually sits between 0.5mm and 1.2mm. Here, thickness affects durability more than flexibilitythicker mesh stands up to abrasion better, while thinner mesh is lighter and easier to track.

 

What to consider: The minimum pulley diameter in your system is the limiting factor. Each belt thickness has a recommended minimum pulley size, and ignoring that spec leads to premature belt failure.

Mesh Size: Only for Open-Weave Belts

Mesh size refers to the openings in the grid structure of mesh conveyor belts. Common sizes include 1×1mm, 2×2.5mm, 4×4mm, and 10×10mm.

 

Small mesh (1×1mm): Fine openings, smoother surface, good for smaller products or where you need minimal marking.

 

Large mesh (10×10mm): More airflow, better drainage, lighter weight, but leaves more contact marks on soft products.

 

Single weft vs. double weft: Single-weft mesh has one cross-thread per weave, making it lighter and more open. Double-weft has two cross-threads, which adds strength and stability. If you're running heavy loads or high tension, double-weft is usually the better call.

 

For solid belts, there's no mesh sizeyou're choosing thickness instead.

Joints: Where Strength Meets Design

The joint is where the belt ends connect to form a loop. It's a potential weak point, so the choice matters.

Edge Finishing: Small Detail, Big Impact

The edges of a belt tend to fray over time if left untreated. Edge finishing prevents that.

 

For mesh belts:

PTFE film edge: A thin strip of PTFE tape bonded to the edges. Protects against abrasion and keeps the weave from unraveling.

Kevlar reinforced edge: Kevlar stitching or tape along the edges. Adds significant durability, especially in high-tension or high-temperature applications.

 

For solid belts:

Edges are generally clean-cut and stable because the fabric is continuous.

But for extra durability, some suppliers offer sealed edges using PTFE tape or similar treatment.

When to care: If your belt runs against metal guide rails or through tight tracking systems, edge finishing is essential. Without it, the edges will break down over time and the belt will fail from the side inward.

Other Custom Options

Width and length: Most belts are custom-cut to match your equipment dimensions. Maximum width depends on the fabric roll sizesome suppliers offer up to 4000mm wide. Length is virtually unlimited, with standard tolerances around ±20mm.

 

Belt color: Standard is usually white, brown, or black, but specific colors may be available upon request.

 

Food-grade certifications: Some applications require FDA, LFGB, or EU compliance. This isn't a physical modificationit's a material and process specification.
